Let's Start a Pro Palette | Mac Haul

If you read my What I Got For Christmas post, you'd know I received a Mac gift card from my in-laws. I deliberated on which products I wanted to pick up for a long time, because Mac is so expensive for me. I had never owned any of the iconic Mac eyeshadows before, and thought this was the perfect opportunity to pick some up.

I decided to start a pro palette, so I bought the large pro palette along with the 15 pan eyeshadow insert. I picked up four shades to start; charcoal brown, nylon, amber lights, and all that glitters. I chose these shades because I knew I would get a lot of use out of them.

[L-R: charcoal brown, nylon, amber lights, all that glitters]

Charcoal Brown is the perfect matte taupe brown. I love using this shade in the crease, and it is also a great match for my brows.

Nylon is a frosty super pale gold shade. This looks great on my skintone as a browbone and inner corner highlight.

Amber Lights is a warm eyeshadow lovers dream! I wish I had picked this shade up sooner.

All That Glitters is a shimmery beige pink with gold glitter that looks great all over the lid for an everyday makeup look.

I've now used these shadows a few times and really like them! I do have others that I like more, such as my Urban Decay ones. However, because I chose shades that I would use on an everyday basis, and the pro palette is so convenient, I will continue to use these. Also, I hope to pick up more in the future, the goal is to eventually fill the 15 pans.

What are you're favourite Mac eyeshadows?

6 Goals for 2016

My hope for this year is that by writing out my goals, and posting it on the Internet for others to see, it will give me the necessary push to try my hardest to 'complete' them by year end. Think that will work? I've split my goals into six categories, ranging from personal, family, blog etc. and GO!

Fitness/Health - I would like to workout at least three times a week. Last year I was fell off the fitness wagon a bit towards to end, but I feel so much better when I make it to the gym consistently. I would also like to drink more water, and eat less meat.

Friends/Family - I really need to make more time for the people I love. I lead a very busy life, as do so many others, and my family and friends tend to take a back burner. This year I intend to do better at reaching out and spending more time with them.

Finances - This year, I hope to increase my savings contributions exponentially. I'm saving for a down payment on a house, a solid emergency fund, RRSP, and RESP for Maxwell. It's a lot - I blame my Finance major, oh, and life.

Education - In 2016, I will finish my Commerce degree and I cannot be more excited to finally be done! I also hope to start and complete my Canadian Securities course.

Career - It's time to get a position in my field of study :/

Blog/YouTube - I want to commit to posting twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I did moderately well with this in 2015, but in 2016 I CAN DO IT! I would also like to gain the courage to post semi-consistently on YouTube as an extension to this blog.

I know this seems like a lot, but these are things I've actually been working on for awhile, but when the new year rolls around, I get a boost of motivation to continue fighting for my dreams. What are your goals/resolutions for 2016?

Maxwell Turned 5!

On Saturday, January 16th, 2016 Maxwell turned five years old! I'm proud of the little man he's becoming. He's smart, thoughtful, and still snuggles his mama, even just for a minute. I love you so much Max!

Saturday, Max had a great time in the midst of a snow storm, glow-in-the-dark mini-putting with his closest friends, eating pizza and ice cream cake, and playing arcade games.

Sunday, we had family and friends over to our place for a more low-key party.

Maxwell had a great birthday weekend, but I'm also kind of glad it's over. Hosting kid's parties are exhausting, and I'm always sad that he's growing up so fast; it just hits harder when it's his actual birthday.

Here are some of my favourite pictures from Maxwell's previous birthday parties.

[4th Birthday, opening presents]

Here are a handful of my favourite pictures of Max growing up. I, of course, have a million more favourites but I'd like to post a few here to share, and for me to look back on easier.

I'm such an emotional wreck looking back on baby pictures of Maxwell. He's getting so big. I can't believe I need to register him for Elementary school now! I need to make a bigger effort to take more pictures, as the older he's gotten, fewer pictures are taken. I think it's because we're so much busier; always on the go. I want to spend the time playing with him rather than standing back to get pictures.

I would like to start sharing a bit more of my family life on here, the blog is called emilynmax [Emily and Max] after all.

Ipsy January 2016 Unboxing

The first Ipsy of the year! This month's theme is 'All Eyes on You'. This is the first time in a while that I've actually liked the bag. It's a great wipe-able material, and I love the colourful retro print on it. It will definitely be going into my purse.

The Balm Mr. Write (Now) Eyeliner in Jac - This is a pretty bronze colour, but I went to swatch it on my hand, didn't even apply pressure yet and the tip broke off. Obviously it will still work, but I was excited about it, now not so much.

Promise Organic Ultra Moisturizing Argan Creme Facial Lotion with Olive Oil - Olive oil? Seems weird to me for that to me in a moisturizer. This 100% natural, cruelty-free facial lotion smells great. I'm going to try this out soon because I've been struggling with some dry skin due to the winter.

Peek Beauty Natural Stain Brow Powder in Expresso - This brow powder looks like a really great colour for my brows. The packaging is cute idea with the sliding tin.

J.Cat Beauty Blinkle Shimmer Eyeshadow in Tangerine Light - This eyeshadow is insane! It's a super metallic, bright orange shade. I'm not sure how I'm going to use this, but I'm excited to get creative.

Trèstique Matte Lip Crayon in Florence Fig - I've received one of these lip crayons before but I'm glad it's a different shade at least. This mauve-y rose shade is what I'm reaching for most lately.

I really like all the products I received this month! What did you get in your Ipsy this month?

Emily ♥

P.S. This post goes live on my son Maxwell's 5th birthday! Ahh I can't believe it! Send him a birthday tweet if you have Twitter, mine is linked to the right of this post. I will be doing a whole post after the celebrations with pictures from his parties.

2015 Makeup Favourites

Today I am sharing with you my favourite makeup products from 2015. Many of these were new discoveries, but some are just tried and true favourites that I got a lot of use from.

Fun fact: I actually filmed this to upload to YouTube with my new camera that my hubby got me for that purpose. With his encouragement I sat down and filmed, with more products than I'm sharing with you today as I had one for each category (ie. liquid lipstick, bronzer, etc.). Upon exporting to my computer to edit, the footage would play unedited, but once loaded into an editing software (I tried three), the audio was distorted. So, instead of uploading a 100% unedited, horrible video, I've changed gears and am now typing this blog post. I'm disappointed that it didn't work out, is it took a lot of courage to sit down in front of the camera and just talk for an extended period of time, with knowing I'd be uploading it into cyber space afterwards.

Anyway, following this ramble, I will try to keep this as short as possible, if you'd like more detail on anything in particular just please ask below. I have organized this in the order of application as much as possible. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and a snack - this is a long one!

Primer: The Smashbox Primer Water, and Smashbox Pore Minimizing Primer work so well as a team. I spray the primer water all over to hydrate, then apply the pore minimizing primer in my t-zone to fill in pores, providing a smooth surface for foundation.

Foundation: The Too Faced Born This Way Foundation provides a natural finish, applies well like a dream. I've written a full review HERE. I wore the L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation daily in the summer. The shade range needs improvement. The medium coverage, and demi-matte formula stayed all day on my super oily skin during the hottest months of the year.

Concealer: The standout concealer for me this year was the Maybelline Fit Me. The lightweight formula is ideal for under the eyes and highlighting the centre of your face. You can find a full review HERE.

Contour: I've used the Too Faced Cocoa Contour Kit every time I do my makeup since  I've bought it. Specifically for the light and medium cocoa shades. Light cocoa to set my concealer, and medium cocoa for contouring. My full review is HERE.

Blush: The Revlon blush in Naughty Nude is a staple. It goes with every makeup look; definitely a Nars Madly kind of shade. It adds a natural blushed look with a slightly glowy finish.

Highlight: The obvious choice is Becca x Jaclyn Hill in Champagne Pop. This highlight is a soft white gold with peach undertones and is great for an evening out.

Brows: My favourite new discovery is the Maybelline Brow Drama. Though the wand is weird, give it a chance. If you have thicker brows like me, it works great. The tinted brow gel adds a bit of definition while keeping them in place all day. I use this on 'no makeup' days for a natural look, or to set my brow after using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Whiz.

Eye Base: A tried and true, Mac Painterly Paint Pot. I have oily lids, and eyeshadow creases quickly on me. This eye base prevents creasing, and conceals any veins or discolouration on your lids.

Eyeshadow: This was a hard category for me as I have many favourites, but if I'm honest with myself my most reached for shadows are from Makeup Geek. Specifically creme brullee and cocoa bear; these shades are a warm neutral lovers dream.

Mascara: Maybelline Lash Sensational is a fantastic mascara from the drugstore! It provides volume and length, the non-waterproof version doesn't run if your eyes get watery.

Lip Liner: The Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in East End Snob is my perfect 'your lips but better' shade. The formula is not too stiff, the product winds up so you don't have to sharpen it, and the slanted tip allows you to get right into the cupids bow, and corners of you mouth.

Lipstick: This was another hard category for me to choose, but thinking back on my year the one lipstick I wore more than any others was Rimmel Kate Moss in 14. This is my favourite brown-y nude shade. It goes with everything, from minimal makeup days to the darkest smokey eyes. This lipstick is a staple for me.

Lip Gloss: NYX Butter Gloss in Crème Brullee can be added on top of almost any lip colour. These glosses have more opacity than many I've tried, and they smell great.

'Other' Lip: This is a bit of a weird category but there are tons of lip products that could technically fall under this. The Revlon Balm Stain in Honey is more than a lip balm, but not quite a lipstick. As is the common theme with this whole favourites, it's a perfect everyday colour, quite similar in shade to the lip liner above. I like being able to just throw this on on-the-go, I like the minty scent, and the twist up packaging.

Holy, that was a blogging marathon. I hope you've stuck around to the end, I tried to keep it as short as possible. As I said above, if you'd like more information on any of these, either check out the full review linked, or just ask :) What were your favourite makeup products of 2015?

What I Got For Christmas | 2015

Today I would like to share with you a handful of the gifts I received for Christmas. I've chosen items that I thought were relevant to what we normally talk about here at emilynmax. I will do my best to keep descriptions brief, and am open to full review suggestions in the comments.

This Christmas I received a ton of LUSH products, which I'm super excited to use. I've photographed a few above, but not all.
Golden Wonder bath bomb - which is covered in gold glitter, and contains a turquoise surprise inside.
Celestial Moisturizer - formulated for sensitive skin.
Love and Light Hand Cream -  This smells incredible!
Buffy Body Butter - Is this the ones Tanya Burr loves? I've never used one of these from LUSH before and am intrigued by the concept.
Twilight Shower Gel - This lavender scented shower gel will be amazing just before bed!
The Comforter Shower Cream - LUSH describes this scent as a cuddle in a bottle, how cute!
Thank you to my mom, brother Sam, and hubby for these lovely products.

Sephora Collection Tools of the Trade Brush Set - This set is perfect! It contains the following brushes: powder, small contour, fan, blending shadow, precision shadow, smudger, angled liner, and a brow comb/brush. This is the perfect addition to my brush collection, and the brush roll will be so handy for travelling. Thank you Dad and Clare!

Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani eyeshadow palette - How gorgeous is this palette?! I have used this once for my New Years makeup look, and the shadows are amazing. I saw a lot of mixed reviews on this palette; many people complaining about the colour selection, but I think it's genius. I am able to use 12/15 shadows on an everyday basis, with the three colourful ones for special occasions. Isn't that what a palette should be for your everyday gal? Thank you mom, it's beautiful!

I also got a MAC gift card from Jeremy's parents, and a Sephora gift card from my Dad and step-mom. So thank you everyone! I will post a haul with what I pick out :)

I just thought this heart eye emoji key chain was too cute not to share! This was from my mom, *cough cough* I mean Santa, as it was in my stocking.

My wonderful, fabulous, amazing hubby bought me a Nikon Coolpix L32 camera, with a note on it saying 'follow your dreams'. I hadn't asked for a new, better quality camera, but he picked one out for me all by himself, and it was such a thoughtful gift that I actually cried. He has been so supportive of my blog this year, even though it cuts into 'our time' quite a bit. Thank you Jeremy, I love you.

I am incredibly grateful for all the gifts my loved ones got me, not just the few I've shared here today, but I enjoyed spending time with them over the holiday season even more.

Tell me down below what you got for Christmas, if you celebrate it, and if you'd like a closer look at anything shown above.

Top 5 Posts of 2015

As one does, I've been reminiscing about this past year. I've done so much in 2015 (that's a whole 'nother post)! Taking a look back, in February, 2015 I launched emilynmax. Here is a round-up of the five most viewed posts on this little space on the Internet I call home.

1. Empties | Products I've Used Up | 2 , August

2.  Review | Maybelline Fit Me Concealer , September

3. Sephora Haul | October 2015 , October

4.  Skincare Overhaul | Part 2 , October

5. Review | Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic , July

I find it interesting to see from the above five photos, how my blogging style has evolved and improved (in my opinion, if even slightly) over the course of the past 11 months.

Thank you all for a wonderful first year blogging! I am looking forward to sharing more with you in 2016.

December Favourites

Happy New Year everyone!! I feel like I've grown so much in 2015 as a person; making leaps and bounds in my personal and professional development. I'm excited to see what 2016 brings my way. I'm thinking of doing a posts on a 2015 recap/ 2016 resolutions, comment below if you'd like to read that.

Anyway, these products have gotten my through the Christmas season and I'm super excited to share them with you!

Head & Shoulders Itchy Scalp Shampoo - Due to the dry winter air, my scalp has been super irritated to the point of losing handfuls of hair each time I washed it. I always though Head & Shoulders was just for dandruff, but they have shampoos for a variety of hair/scalp conditions. I grabbed this one for itchy scalp, with eucalyptus, and it has done wonders! My scalp is almost completely better in a few weeks of use.

Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream - I recently shared this product in my Winter Skin Essentials post. This is the best, non-greasy hand cream I have ever used. If you struggle with dry hands, I would recommend giving this one a try.

Colour Lippie Stix in Lumière - If you are a regular reader of my blog, you would know that I am a firm Kathleen Lights supporter. I try my best to support her success by purchasing her collaborations and sharing them myself. This lippie stick is one from her first collaboration with ColourPop and though I've used is one and off for almost a year, this past month it has seen a lot of use! The dusty mauve shade combined with the matte finish is perfect for the winter months in my opinion.

Nars Blush in Orgasm - This blush has been sitting in my collection for a long time without much regular use. But as with Lumière, this month I've used it a bunch, especially for family gatherings for the holidays, I didn't want a bold highlight on my cheekbones, so I opted for this peachy pink blush with serious gold shimmer. It provided a bit of shimmer, but nothing like Champagne Pop.

Benefit The POREfessional Primer - This sample size has lasted my ages. This primer minimizes the appearance of pores incredibly well. It does provide a bit of a silicone-y, slippery feel to apply foundation of the top of, leaving brush strokes around my nose, but that's nothing a damp makeup sponge can't fix.

L'Oréal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara - Although I purchased this mascara by mistake, I have been loving it!! The big bristle brush, combined with the carbon black formula, makes for intense, voluminous lashes. When this runs out, I will definitely repurchase.

What products have you been loving this month? Don't forget to let me know about the recap/resolutions post. It's different from what I usually post here so I would like to know if you guys would like to read it.

Best wishes for 2016 to you and your family!

Emily ♥
